Commitment to the safety of children and young people

Kelly Sports is committed to providing a safe environment for all children and young people. This policy complies with the legislative frameworks of South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, the ACT, and the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations. We do not tolerate bullying, harassment, or discrimination of any kind.

Scope of Policy

This policy applies to all employees, volunteers, work placement students, contractors, and board/committee members (“workers”). Completion of mandatory child safety training is a contractual prerequisite for all workers. All workers are required to sign a statement confirming their understanding of and commitment to this policy.

Communication

This policy is available on our website. All workers receive a copy during induction.

Children and young people are encouraged to express their views and are informed of their rights in age-appropriate ways. We ensure they know they can speak up, be heard, and raise concerns with any worker or with the help of their parent/guardian.

Code of Conduct & Screening

All workers over 14 years of age must hold a current Working With Children Check (WWCC) or state equivalent. We verify and link all WWCCs to our HR system and notify the relevant state authority of any reportable incidents.

Workers must:

  • Act as positive role models and maintain professional boundaries.
  • Always have another adult present during one-on-one activities where possible.
  • Report concerns of harm or abuse immediately.
  • Follow this policy at all times.
  • Treat all individuals respectfully and equitably.
  • Respond to children's concerns respectfully and appropriately.
  • Promote participation and voice for children and young people.

Workers must not:

  • Engage in rough or inappropriate physical games.
  • Show favouritism or provide gifts to individuals.
  • Perform personal tasks children or young people can do themselves.
  • Discriminate for any reason.

Breaches must be reported to management at 1300 535 590 or info@kellysports.com.au. Breaches will be addressed promptly and may result in disciplinary action or termination.

Recruitment

We ensure suitable individuals work with children through:

  • Child safety statements in all job ads.
  • Clear, safety-focused position descriptions.
  • Behavioural interviews.
  • Two reference and qualification checks.
  • Onboarding.

Training, Supervision and Support

To ensure the highest level of safety and remain compliant with national standards, Kelly Sports enforces a rigorous training framework:

1. Mandatory National Child Safety Training

All workers must complete nationally recognised child safety training every 3 years. This training covers:

  • Staff (ACT, VIC, NSW, SA): Must complete the comprehensive one-hour training module
  • New Staff: Completion of the comprehensive one-hour training module course is a contractual prerequisite. The certificate of completion must be provided before their first day of work.
  • Frequency: Training must be refreshed every three years to ensure knowledge remains current.

2. Ongoing Education

  • Induction: Induction includes a review of the mandatory reporting information relevant to the specific state of employment.
  • Staff Meetings: Child safety is a standing agenda item for all team meetings to discuss emerging risks or best practices.
  • Supervision: Regular performance reviews include a focus on child safety, wellbeing, and adherence to the Code of Conduct.

Reporting and Responding to Harm

We define harm as physical or psychological abuse, neglect, or exploitation.

  • Reporting: All workers (mandated or not) are encouraged to report any risk of harm.
  • Escalation: All internal reports must be escalated to management immediately following a report to authorities.
  • Investigation: If a report involves a worker, they will be removed from child-facing roles during investigation.

We will:

  • Support the child or family as needed.
  • Refer to services when appropriate.
  • Keep all reports confidential and securely stored.

If a child is at immediate risk, call 000.
