Helping Your Child Choose Extracurricular Activities

Participation in extracurricular activities is important for children because it encourages the development of different types of skills and abilities that will benefit them in the long run. Of course, all parents want their children to be well - rounded, balanced individuals so extracurricular activities are great in this way because they encourage children to develop skills in various areas. This also leads them to developing a number of interests and talents which is great.

Allow your child to select their own extracurricular activities based on their interests and personality type. This is important because keeping children enrolled in activities they aren’t enjoying will negatively impact their self esteem.

It’s hard not to be overwhelmed by all the extracurricular options these days with so many different activities on offer to our children!

Below is a list of various extracurricular activities your child may be interested in trying;

- Team sports: football, soccer, hockey, netball, basketball, cricket, volleyball

- Individual sports: tennis, golf, athletics, swimming, surfing, martial arts

- Creative activities: art, musical instrument, singing, theatre, drama, dancing

It’s important to note that there is such a thing as overscheduling. Scheduling too many extracurricular activities will overwhelm your child and can leave them feeling stressed and tired. Ferrying them around will also leave you stressed and tired.

If your child is eager to try every activity under the sun, encourage them to do so but to make your life easier, schedule them throughout the school year.

For example, let them try cricket or football in Term 1, netball and drama in Term 2 and so on.
